...and now, BACK TO THE SEWING MACHINE

Summer in a hot, humid beach town... What's a girl to do?

Keeping busy . . .  with a bit of air conditioning and the hum of the fan!

Well, most of the time...

Searched online for a picture using the words "hot seamstress"
(Yep. That was a mistake...not exactly what I was thinking.) 
 

 Oops. 
That is NOT me sewing.

When I thought "hot" -  I was thinking more like this:

 Oh well.

My new motto is "I do what I want!"
(That is just a summer extravagance, I know.)

So, when I get the energy... here are some of my ReCreation Projects.

So, here on the left, I started laying out some of the different clothing pieces that 

I have collected, between donations and my thrift store finds. 

On the right, is the 

ReCreated Tunic. 

Then, I had this super small outfit. 

But, it had some great embroidery.

So, I added a man's hawaiian shirt another gauzy blouse and a long sleeve t-shirt to come up with a new dress that I absolutely am in love with.  This one is just waaaay to lovely. 

 

I also have been doing some painting on natural fiber clothing and it is turning out pretty fun. I have another batch since this photo, too.

And, all of these, also have the quote added,
"Live in the SunShine,
Swim the Sea, Drink the Wild Air."  

A few more t shirt skirts.
Next on the list, is a new style t-shirt dress.
I have 3 sizes of a pattern to try out for those.
And, about two dozen black t shirts to get busy
on after that.

Another fun special order project that just got finished are these t-shirts on the left... basically, there were about 7 or 8 of the square, basic no-shape-what-so-ever t shirts, and they are now transformed into scoop neck, cute style t shirts with a bit more shape and shirt tail hems.   

Oh yeah, did I mention the flowy Re-Created cruise dresses?
These just have to be favorites...

They are fun, summery dresses each Re-Created for a new life.
(And, I think the "new life" should definitely be on the dance floor.) 



The detail work on the purple one was a kinda
a long-term project... The flowers were hand-cut
and each hand-sewn before being attached along with 
the beadwork. But, oh!
My favorite colors....  

Here is another project in the "Idea" stage.
I have 4 pieces.
And, the plan for this to be a funky cowgirl dress.

I pinned it on the dress form just to see what would happen.... Well, like I said...
this one is still a bit of a mess.
By fall, it will be something pretty cute to wear with a pair of cowboy (girl) boots.

MY SUMMER 2014

After Friday, June 27th, my "Off the Beach" studio 

will be open "by appointment only" for the summer.

This year my "summer" will extend to October 17th. 

Why?  You may ask. . .

Well, on October 4th, our daughter is getting married! 

Our only daughter . . . so this is super exciting!   "Whoo-hoo!"

(And I am discovering  what "Trash the Dress" or "Rock the Frock" 

means! . . . The things I never knew I never knew!)   

And, we are hosting a Grand Copper Canyon Travel Adventure 

during the first part of October.  

So, the studio will re-open on Friday, October 17th 

and continue open each Friday afternoon through June of 2015. 

We will have our final Mermaid's Market of the season on 

Saturday, July 5th  indoors - at the Lobby of the Sonoran Spa. 

The public is Welcome to this event! 

  

Of course, we will also have a Mermaid's Market on 

Labor Day Weekend - the Market will be held once again 

inside at the Sonoran Spa Lobby on Saturday, August 30th 

(Labor Day is Monday, September 1st, 2014)

Then the normal outdoor Mermaids Market 

will be scheduled to resume in the early fall.



OH! Yes. . . I almost forgot!

Pirates and Barnacles

Barnacles

So, I just felt inspired to do something about barnacles. 

On Saturday, for our Pirate and Mermaid Party, 

Dressed as a pirate, I wore barnacles on my arm. . .

I was going to put them on my face...

but I got scared.

 About Barnacles:

Barnacles attach themselves to animals when they are very young and in the larvae stage of their lives. Once the baby barnacle has effectively glued itself to something hard, a thin layer of flesh wraps around the barnacle and an outer shell is produced. Once the barnacle has an outer shell, it is protected from the elements and all kinds of predators. 

As soon as the baby barnacle has fixed itself onto something, it is generally there for the rest of it's life. Barnacles are filter feeders (also known as suspension feeders) that feed on food particles that they strain out of the water. The shell of the barnacle is made up of a number of plates (usually 6), with feathery leg-like appendages that draw water into their shell so that they can feed. 

 Barnacles have numerous predators, particularly when they are babies and floating around in the water looking for something to attach themselves to. As the barnacle larvae are so tiny, they float around with the plankton in the water. Once the barnacle is older and has it's tough outer shell, few predators can actually eat it.  

One species (the goose barnacle) is eaten by humans in Spain and Portugal.

A Bit of Recognition is Wonderful!

So, it was nice to be nominated as a Re-cycle Artist for the 2013 "Outstanding Artistic Performance Award".  I think that it is super cool to get recognition! 

I was asked to submit a bio on what I accomplished in 2013 as an artist. 

I think 2013 was a pretty good year for me as an "artist" trying to expand in my local community.  

And just so you know, "artist" is not a term that I would use to describe myself. 

Maybe "eclectic" or "crazy-creative-with-too-much-going-on-in-her-head" 

that would be more my self-description. . .       

OK Back to the events of 2013.

I took a big chance and crossed that language barrier that seems to loom over me!  

Maybe next year, I will give myself an award for finally conquering Spanish!

The year of 2013 was a busy year for me as January 5^th was the first Mermaid’s Market of the year. With the goal of providing a venue for local artists and artisans, late in 2012 I had brainstormed the idea of a “Mermaid’s Market” (similar to previous events that had been termed farmer’s markets) with the goal of providing a regularly scheduled artisan’s showcase – a well-advertised event where visitors would have a fun place to congregate to meet, browse and shop.

With the help of my husband, Russ, we procured the permissions to host this event twice each month thru the months of October to May each year. The event has become a well-known Saturday event where between 10-20 artisans display a great variety of items from coffee, chocolate confections, jewelry, painting, clothing, metalwork, candles, recycled items and much, much more. www.mermaidsmarket.com

In 2013, I was also invited to return to the Tucson Flamenco Festival as one of their International Designers of Flamenco-Inspired clothing. Along with three other designers, I had the great honor of having my designs showcased at this fantastic Flamenco Festival.

In April of 2013, I hosted the Spring Fling Fashion Show and again in November I hosted the Fall Fashion Fiesta. Both of these events, included my recycled clothing designs along with those of Cathi & Dalia – local clothing designers from Casa Turquesa. My hope is for the Fall Fashion Fiesta to be an annual event and to expand to include more local clothing designers.

However, the highlight of 2013 in my opinion, was October’s Peñasco Runway Project:  Altered Ropa Challenge. This was an idea that I have had for some time, inspired by the popular US reality show, Project Runway. This was a sewing project focused on re-cycling or re-designing existing items of clothing into a new garment. This project was the most challenging for me, because I am not bilingual, and I wanted to cross the language barrier for this contest. In all, over a dozen local contestants entered the contest, and just a very few of them spoke English!  A select group of patrons allowed me the ability to award several cash prizes to the winners in 3 categories, along with a Grand Prize of $3000 pesos for the most outstanding designer! www.mexiconaomi.blogspot.mx/2013/10/the-altered-ropa-contest-october-8th.html

Along with these events of 2013, I keep busy at my studio, “Off the Beach” where I create a variety of seashell crafts, jewelry pieces along with many sewing and design projects.

Puerto Peñasco is such a great community for any artistic endeavors! I think creativity thrives here under the Sonoran Sunshine – the Sea of Cortez and the surrounding Desert Reserve inspires us all with its beauty.
